Cardano ADA Nears Six-Month Futures Milestone, Boosting ETF Prospects
Cryptocurrency Cardano's ADA is on the cusp of a significant milestone that could potentially pave the way for its first US-based exchange-traded fund (ETF). The CME Group, a leading derivatives marketplace, launched regulated ADA futures on February 9, 2026. This six-month mark, which falls on August 9, is crucial because it meets one of the key eligibility criteria set by the SEC for spot ETFs.
Under the SEC's generic listing standards, a crypto asset can qualify for a spot ETF if it has traded on a regulated futures market for at least six months. With this milestone almost within reach, Cardano could be one step closer to having its first US-based ETF approved. Grayscale, a prominent asset manager, has already filed for the Grayscale Cardano Trust ETF (GADA), which would hold ADA directly and track its market price.
While this development is significant, it's essential to note that meeting this milestone does not guarantee an ETF approval. The SEC previously named ADA in its 2023 lawsuits against Coinbase and Binance, arguing that the token could qualify as a security. This uncertainty remains an important risk for any spot ADA ETF filing.
