Cardano ADA Surges 4% as x402 Payment Standard for AI Agents Goes Live

Cardano's ADA token has surged 4% over the past 24 hours to its highest level in four months. This price hike comes as a result of the blockchain's integration with the x402 payment standard for AI agents, which is now live. The open HTTP payment protocol was originally developed by Coinbase in 2025 and later moved under Linux Foundation governance.

x402 revives the HTTP 402 'Payment Required' status code, enabling artificial intelligence agents to make blockchain payments directly over the web without needing conventional accounts or API keys. Under this system, an AI agent requesting a paid service receives pricing information from the provider and then authorizes a transaction that is verified and settled on-chain by a facilitator.

The Cardano Foundation engineers developed the x402 client, server, and facilitator components after Cardano's specification was incorporated into the official x402 repository around September 9. The integration is now available as a TypeScript package through npm, with Python support expected later. A facilitator has already completed a transaction using Cardano's pre-production testing network.
