Cardano Blockchain Solutions for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Renewable Diesel Launched
The Cardano Foundation has joined forces with Petrobras to develop two blockchain-based solutions that will enable the verification of sustainability data for aviation fuel and renewable diesel.
The first project focuses on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), a lower-carbon alternative to conventional aviation fuel. However, its use requires reliable verification of environmental benefits, which is currently complicated by fragmented documents and databases maintained by producers, airlines, and other participants.
The solution addresses this issue through a Book-and-Claim model, which separates the accounting of physical SAF from its associated environmental attributes. This allows the environmental benefit to be assigned to an airline, organization, or individual passenger regardless of where the fuel was produced and used.
The process involves five main stages: verification of SAF certificates for compliance with CORSIA requirements, tokenization on the public Cardano network, distribution of tokens to airlines or allocation to passenger trips based on route and calculated emissions, claiming and redeeming tokens through a dedicated application, and permanent removal of corresponding tokens from circulation once used.
