Cardano Blockchain Tapped by Petrobras for Cleaner Fuel Tracking

Petrobras, Brazil's state-owned oil and gas company, is testing Cardano blockchain technology to track cleaner fuels. The two research projects focus on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Petrobras' diesel made from renewable feedstocks.

The Cardano blockchain will verify the origin of a fuel's environmental benefits, prevent double counting of emissions reductions, and track fuel across its life cycle. According to Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Cardano Foundation, Brazil has been actively using Cardano across public and industrial sectors.

In one project, the blockchain will record the origin of the environmental benefit, its recipient, and the moment it is used. This will prevent situations where the same emissions reduction is counted by multiple companies. A passenger will be able to specify their departure and arrival airports, calculate the corresponding fuel benefit, and receive a certificate linked to the original fuel certificate.
