Cardano Catalyst Empowers Community to Fund Ecosystem Growth
Cardano Catalyst is an innovative community funding mechanism that empowers ADA holders to decide which ecosystem projects receive funding from the network's own treasury. Unlike traditional blockchains, where development is typically funded through a foundation or venture round, Cardano has built a public process for project proposal and review.
The Catalyst program was launched in 2020 by Input Output, the engineering firm behind Cardano, as a way to fund ecosystem growth directly from the on-chain treasury. To date, more than $150 million has been paid out across thousands of proposals, covering developer tooling, wallets, education, and early-stage dApps.
The process begins with proposal submission through the Catalyst platform, where ideas are scored by reviewers and voted on by ADA holders. Funded teams are expected to deliver measurable outcomes and complete milestones tied to funding releases. The program has funded a broad mix of projects, including DeFi tools, developer tooling, dApps, education, community initiatives, infrastructure, enterprise integrations, and general Cardano adoption campaigns.
Cardano Catalyst differs from traditional grants in that decision-making power is held by the community rather than a closed panel. The program's benefits include opening funding decisions to the wider community, giving smaller teams a chance at ecosystem funding, publishing proposal data and outcomes openly, and tying funding to milestones instead of upfront payments.
