Cardano Enters AI-Powered Payment Race with x402 Integration

Cardano has joined the ranks of Solana and XRP Ledger in the pursuit of integrating its assets into AI-powered payment systems. The Cardano Foundation engineers have successfully built a client, server software, and facilitator that enables agents to request payments directly from services using $ADA or tokens issued on the network.

The technology, known as x402, was initially developed by Coinbase in 2025 before being contributed to a Linux Foundation-backed organization. Solana and XRP Ledger have already adopted this standard, allowing their assets to be used for machine payments.

While Cardano has completed a real transaction on its pre-production network, the release does not yet show agents paying for commercial services at scale. However, developers can begin integrating Cardano's assets into their applications.
