Cardano Governance System Faces Sept. 1 Deadline

Cardano's governance system is facing a crucial test as it approaches a Sept. 1 deadline to renew four Constitutional Committee seats. The outcome matters because an undersized committee would effectively stall most on-chain governance, despite normal network operations continuing.

The existing committee has seven members, but four of them are set to expire at epoch 653. If the renewal does not pass, only three members will remain, which is below Cardano's minimum committee size of five.

A vote to renew the committee seats remains well below required thresholds. According to an Aug. 17 GovTool snapshot, the renewal has 32.46% support from delegated representatives (DReps) and 1.95% from stake pool operators (SPOs). It needs 67% and 51%, respectively.

The remaining uncast voting power makes passage possible, but not probable. Delegations can change, and uncast voting power does not necessarily translate into eventual support.
