Cardano is counting down to its ninth anniversary on September 23, 2026. To celebrate, the Cardano Foundation shared the story behind the blockchain's namesake and token.

The $ADA token is named after Ada Lovelace (1815-1852), a mathematician widely credited with writing the first computer program. This is fitting for a blockchain that prioritizes mathematical rigor, as evidenced by its use of peer-reviewed academic research, formal mathematical verification, and rigorous scientific methodology.

The smallest unit of $ADA is called a lovelace, equivalent to one million ADA. According to the Cardano Foundation, this name choice reflects the blockchain's emphasis on math-first principles.

In addition to its token, the Cardano blockchain itself is named after Gerolamo Cardano (1501-1576), an Italian mathematician and polymath who pioneered early cryptography. This tribute acknowledges the blockchain's foundation in mathematical research and science.
