Cardano Pogun Enables DeFi Access for Idle Bitcoin
Cardano's Input Output Group (IOG) is working on a platform called Pogun that allows Bitcoin holders to access DeFi protocols without giving up custody of their coins. This is made possible through 'mirroring' technology, which clones the representation of Bitcoin assets onto Cardano's chain.
The original Bitcoin stays put, while the mirrored version can interact with DeFi protocols on Cardano. The platform relies on bilateral agreements between counterparties for transactions, eliminating the need for oracles or collateral pools.
Pogun is being built on top of interoperability groundwork laid by Cardano, including atomic swaps between the two chains. The project's lead developer, Omer Husain, is working with a team to bring Pogun to life.
The rollout timeline for Pogun includes a non-margin credit market hitting Cardano's mainnet in Q2 2026, followed by a yield-generating application in Q3 and the trust-minimized BitVM mirroring implementation in Q4. All transactions within Pogun require ADA fees, with revenues flowing back into the Cardano treasury.
This move is part of IOG's broader strategy to drive growth through cross-chain interoperability, which involves requesting nearly $50 million in funding for 2026. The competitive landscape includes projects like Stacks and Babylon, but Cardano's eUTXO model shares architectural DNA with Bitcoin's own transaction model.
IOG is making a substantial bet on this strategy, with the Q4 2026 BitVM implementation being a crucial linchpin for trust-minimized bridges. While this approach has proven difficult to ship securely in the past, IOG is confident that Pogun can change the game for Bitcoin DeFi access.
The availability of $1.6 trillion worth of idle Bitcoin capital presents an attractive opportunity for Cardano and other projects like Pogun. By providing a platform for Bitcoin holders to tap into DeFi protocols without sacrificing control, Pogun aims to unlock this potential and drive growth in the ecosystem.
