Cardano Prepares Blockchain Infrastructure for Agent Economy
Cardano is preparing its blockchain infrastructure for the agent economy through programmable transactions, identity tools, and machine-focused payment standards. This comes as artificial intelligence (AI) agents evolve from systems that generate information into software capable of executing tasks, interacting with services, and making payments.
The need for AI agents to make autonomous payments is growing as they require purchasing model inference, datasets, APIs, computing resources, or digital services without human approval. Cardano describes autonomous agents as software capable of holding wallets and submitting on-chain transactions.
Cardano's blockchain supports the x402 payment standard, which allows software to encounter a priced online resource, authorize a payment, and continue the request without creating a billing account. The platform also integrates with the Masumi smart-contract protocol, adding escrow, refunds, and on-chain decision logging.
The Extended Unspent Transaction Output (EUTXO) accounting model enables outputs to contain scripts defining conditions that must be satisfied before funds move. This predictability helps agents operate within predefined budgets instead of receiving unpredictable execution costs.
