Cardano Unveils AI Payment Capabilities, But Commercial Adoption Remains Uncertain
Cardano has taken a significant step forward in its development, as it can now support AI payments. On paper, this means that an artificial intelligence agent can request payment for a service or product and have it processed through Cardano's network. However, the actual implementation of this technology is still in its early stages.
The x402 software-development kit has been updated to include Cardano network support in its TypeScript implementation. This will enable developers who work with JavaScript and TypeScript to prepare Cardano payments and connect them with x402-enabled services. The facilitator sits between the application requesting payment and the Cardano network, inspecting a signed transaction to ensure it matches the payment request before submitting it to the blockchain.
While this development marks an important milestone for Cardano, it's essential to note that no public commercial application has yet demonstrated AI payments on mainnet. The next crucial step will be for an independent agent to pay for a real product and return for additional purchases, providing meaningful evidence of commercial adoption.
