Cardano Used to Verify Deforestation-Free Claims Through QR Codes

Cardano's blockchain technology is being used to verify supply chain claims through QR codes in a pilot project. The initiative involves Open Food Chain, a consortium partner of the Cardano Foundation, along with Kraft Heinz and dairy trader Interfood. Verified supply chain information is recorded on the Cardano blockchain and linked to a QR code printed on product packaging.

Shoppers can scan the code to access the product story and trace deforestation-free claims through the supply chain to its farm-level origin. Unlike systems that require consumers to hold or transfer digital assets, no token changes hands in this process.

The first in-store test was conducted on Chocolatemakers chocolate. One in 10 shoppers scanned the code during the trial, spending an average of 42 seconds viewing the product story. While these figures provide an initial measure of consumer engagement, further tests are needed to assess the system's effectiveness.
