Cardano's AI Agent Economy Debut Falls Flat for Holders
Cardano has become part of the AI agent economy in crypto, thanks to its inclusion in the official software development kit for x402, a new payment standard created by Coinbase. This integration aims to enable AI agents to process payments using Cardano's network. However, despite this development, Cardano's holders are not likely to see a significant increase in value due to these activities.
The x402 protocol allows software agents to pay for web services or information on the web without needing a credit card or signing up for accounts. As of September 23, the Agent Economy tracker reported over 85 million x402 payments on the Base chain, Coinbase's network, and 66.9 million on Solana. In contrast, Cardano's own agent network, Masumi, has recorded only 38,777 transactions, with a small increase in traction this year.
The bigger problem is that Cardano's holders wouldn't see much benefit if the coin's agentic payments ecosystem really took off. Even if Cardano won every x402 payment ever made, it would only be worth a sliver of the coin's $9.2 billion market value as of September 30. Payment volume isn't the same as holder income, and Cardano collected just $39,380 in network transaction fees this August, down from $312,207 a year prior.
