Cardano's RealFi Platform Aims to Boost Yields on Stablecoins
Cardano's RealFi platform has launched on the Cardano blockchain, offering yields of up to 9% on stablecoins. This platform routes capital into real-world loans and bonds, a strategy employed successfully by the XRP Ledger with tokenized US Treasuries. However, this success story raises a question about who benefits when a blockchain grows.
RealFi launched on October 1, 2026, with its own dollar token, USDrf, alongside a yield-bearing version, sUSDrf. Lenders receive sUSDrf when they deposit USDrf, and the yield comes from various sources, including money market funds, Treasuries, corporate bonds, private credit, and direct loans. However, investors in sUSDrf take on risks, as they are the first to incur losses if borrowers default, and they must wait seven days before converting back to USDrf.
Although prominent figures in Cardano's community support the launch, RealFi is currently unavailable to users in the US, European Union, and UK, limiting access for many potential lenders. Cardano has a modest amount of around $70 million in stablecoins, and the total value locked in its decentralized finance applications has dropped significantly, from over $140 million in May to about $67 million.
