Casper Crypto Crashes Over 85%, Fails to Catch Up with Rivals
Casper's native cryptocurrency, CSPR, has experienced a significant decline in value over the past year, dropping by approximately 86%. This makes it one of the worst-performing Layer-1 cryptocurrencies during this time frame. According to CoinGecko, the token price fell from around $0.012 to nearly $0.0017, setting new annual lows.
The prolonged price decline has been attributed to several factors, including weak investor demand, declining trading volume and liquidity, competition from newer Layer-1 blockchains, and a lack of ecosystem growth. Additionally, tokenomics and selling pressure have also contributed to the market's downturn. The Casper Association disclosed in late July 2024 that a privilege escalation vulnerability had been exploited to access 13 accounts, but it is unclear whether this incident directly affected the CSPR price.
Casper has continued to develop its protocol with upgrades such as Casper 2.x and the Zug consensus protocol. However, despite these efforts, the network's ecosystem growth remains relatively slow compared to other major Layer-1 chains. As a result, the CSPR token has depreciated in price relative to both the U.S. dollar and popular cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.
