Catastrophe Looms as South Africa's Crypto Rules Face Growing Opposition
South Africa's proposed cross-border crypto rules are facing growing opposition from businesses and individuals. A coalition called Catastrophe, comprising over 200 organizations and nearly 6,300 individuals, is campaigning for changes to the draft rules. The group argues that the current proposal would restrict cross-border crypto transactions, forcing businesses to use traditional forex channels instead.
The draft Crypto Asset Manual proposes preventing businesses from using stablecoins for cross-border transactions, which critics say would be a major setback for the development of the crypto sector in South Africa. They argue that this could drive investment and jobs offshore, as seen with three proposed investments worth R2.2 billion being put on hold until clarity is provided.
GoTyme Bank has joined the coalition, stating that it believes South Africa's regulatory framework should apply consistent standards to equivalent financial activities, regardless of the technology used. The bank argues that inconsistent rules create perverse incentives and hinder financial competitiveness.
