Ceffu's $120M Withdrawal Sparks Concern Over Institutional Custody Framework
Crypto news has been abuzz this Monday, August 24th, as institutional custodian Ceffu made a sudden withdrawal of $120 million in USDC from Ethena's Coinbase Prime custody wallets. According to on-chain data from Onchain Lens, the transfer was made across six transactions over the past day.
The largest withdrawal of $30 million occurred just six hours before the report was published, and can be traced to wallet address 0x00669Bf9BA4EAab1BBd301C1ccDf69932F521049. Ethena's protocol for USDe relies on hedged investments and off-exchange settlement providers to protect collateral received.
This development has raised questions about the underlying framework of institutions holding their collateral through third-party custodians, rather than directly on exchanges. The scale of this withdrawal may seem insignificant compared to Ethena's overall size, with a supply of $4.46 billion and a backing ratio above 101%, but it highlights the need for transparency in these transactions.
Ethena has emphasized that its protocol assets are never held under beneficial ownership by off-exchange settlement providers, including Ceffu, Copper, and Fireblocks. However, this distinction becomes murky when large transfers occur without explanation.
