CEL Solicitors Uncovers Potential $433.5M Treasure Hunt for Early Bitcoin Users
CEL Solicitors has made a significant breakthrough in tracing assets from Intersango, an early Bitcoin exchange that disappeared over a decade ago. The firm claims to have identified more than 5,500 BTC, which at today's price of around $78,824 per coin, would be worth approximately $433.5 million.
A notable example of this recovery is the case of one former UK customer who successfully recovered 61 BTC from the exchange's remains. This translates to a value of about $4.81 million at current prices. The process took several months, with the client instructing CEL on January 20 and the settlement being finalized on May 28.
The firm emphasizes that former Intersango users may have claims against these traced assets, provided they can provide evidence connecting their old account balances to the identified coins. This places a high value on records created during Bitcoin's early years, including emails, bank statements, support tickets, and account records. These documents could now support ownership claims worth millions of dollars.
The recovery process is complex, involving the use of blockchain tracing to reconstruct asset movements across public ledgers. However, personal ownership still requires documentation connecting an individual to their exchange account and a specific balance. CEL's traced pool defines the potential scale of the property at stake, but the amount that former users recover will depend on how much of this pool can be tied to provable balances.
