Central Texas Sees Massive Growth in Cryptocurrency Scams
Central Texas is seeing a significant rise in cryptocurrency scams, according to the FBI.
Nationwide, reported cyber investment scams have resulted in over $11 billion in losses.
The Special Agent in Charge of the area FBI branch described the local cases as a 'massive growth.'
Scammers often develop trust with victims on dating sites or social media before presenting them with an investment opportunity, claiming unrealistic gains. They then instruct victims to buy cryptocurrency and send it to their own wallet.
The agent explained that cryptocurrency's anonymity makes it difficult to trace transactions, making it a perfect vehicle for fraudsters.
In response, the FBI has launched an operation to identify fraudulent crypto transactions, helping to close over 3,800 cases and recover $226 million for victims.
