CFTC Aims to Regulate Crypto Markets with New Proposal
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has unveiled a new proposal aimed at regulating retail transactions involving crypto assets (CTXs). Announced on Monday (Oct. 5, 2026), the proposal seeks to establish a regulatory framework for digital asset markets and transactions, with the CFTC inviting public comments on the plan.
CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig emphasized the importance of this step, stating that it is crucial for ensuring the U.S. remains a leader in the crypto space. He highlighted the need for clarity, certainty, and consumer protections in the crypto asset markets, aiming to integrate these transactions into a uniform national market regulatory framework.
The proposal also addresses ways to prevent abusive practices in cryptocurrency markets and transactions under a uniform national regime. Selig noted that this effort is part of a broader plan to create regulations that prevent fraudulent schemes, such as those seen with FTX.
The proposal comes after the U.S. Senate's failure to advance the Clarity Act, which would have established a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies. With the legislative path stalled, the CFTC is taking steps to address gaps in crypto-asset market structure, even as it acknowledges the need for congressional authorization.
