CFTC Allows Exchanges to Convert Index Futures into Perpetual Contracts
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has taken a step to allow U.S. exchanges to convert certain index futures into perpetual contracts. On October 5, the CFTC’s Division of Market Oversight issued temporary relief, permitting designated contract markets to remove expiration dates from qualifying broad-based security index futures. This move brings a popular crypto trading structure into mainstream derivatives.
The relief is conditional and narrow in scope. Exchanges must meet several customer-protection requirements, including soliciting feedback from affected traders, providing advance notice, and offering exit opportunities. They also cannot alter other material contract terms during the conversion process. The temporary relief expires on October 20.
Perpetual futures, while popular in crypto markets, are relatively new in traditional derivatives. The CFTC has previously allowed similar conversions for digital-commodity perpetual-style futures, signaling a growing acceptance of the structure. The current relief extends this concept to index futures, offering U.S. exchanges a path to test true perpetual contracts under strict regulatory conditions.
This development marks another instance of crypto-inspired innovations influencing traditional financial markets. Although the relief is temporary, it could pave the way for broader adoption of perpetual contracts in regulated U.S. exchanges.
