CFTC Approves Perpetual Futures for US Exchanges with Conditions
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has taken a significant step to streamline the launch of perpetual futures in the U.S. On October 3, the agency granted conditional no-action relief, which was publicly announced on October 5. This decision allows eligible U.S. exchanges to list perpetual-style futures contracts tied to security indexes without expiration dates, following a request from Coinbase Derivatives.
Coinbase Derivatives sought a waiver of the standard 10-business-day waiting period on October 1. The CFTC's approval, subject to certain conditions, opens the door for U.S. exchanges to offer perpetual futures products. These products are widely used in global derivatives markets and could enhance product innovation, liquidity, and adoption for cryptocurrencies.
The CFTC imposed specific conditions to protect traders. Before removing an expiration date, exchanges must consult traders with open positions and provide at least five days' notice. This measure aims to ensure transparency and fairness in the market.
The move is expected to accelerate the development of perpetual futures products in the U.S., potentially affecting strategies in decentralized finance (DeFi) and decentralized exchange (DEX) derivatives markets.
