CFTC Preps for Blockchain-Fueled Market Revolution
The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) is preparing to adapt its oversight as financial-market structures and technologies evolve, according to Michael S. Selig, chairman of the agency.
Selig outlined plans to prepare US financial markets for greater use of blockchain technology, tokenisation, AI, and continuous trading during a recent speech at the 2026 US Treasury Market Conference on September 22nd.
The CFTC chairman identified the tokenisation of real-world assets as a key area of development, arguing that tokenised collateral could support more dynamic liquidity and market resilience.
Selig said blockchain technology and tokenised assets could enable near-instantaneous settlement and real-time collateral mobility across clearing houses, intermediaries and end users.
