CFTC proposes new rules for cryptocurrency market regulation
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has introduced new proposals for regulating cryptocurrency markets, following the failure of digital asset legislation in Congress last month. The CFTC, one of the two primary financial regulators overseeing the industry, announced plans to establish rules for crypto asset transactions and markets.
The proposed rules aim to clarify how existing commodities laws apply to digital asset transactions. They also introduce a new type of exchange, called crypto asset markets, which would specifically handle retail crypto transactions involving margin, leverage, or financing.
CFTC Chair Michael Selig emphasized that these proposals create a federal option for crypto asset exchanges but do not mandate all exchanges to register with the agency. He compared this approach to the banking regulatory system, where firms can choose between federal or state charters based on their intended activities.
