CFTC Proposes New Rules for Leveraged Crypto Trades
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) introduced a proposal on Monday to bring digital asset transactions and markets under its regulatory purview. This move comes after crypto market structure legislation was stymied last month, prompting the agency to leverage its existing authority.
The measure, if finalized, would specifically target leveraged crypto trades offered to retail customers. It would also create a new registration category for crypto exchanges that provide such leveraged trading options, ensuring they comply with CFTC regulations.
The proposal underscores the CFTC’s efforts to assert control over the rapidly evolving crypto market, particularly in areas where legislation has lagged. By focusing on leveraged trades, the agency aims to address potential risks to retail investors while establishing clearer operational guidelines for exchanges.
