CFTC Seizes Opportunity for Rulemaking as CLARITY Act Fails in Senate
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has shifted its focus towards rulemaking after the Senate blocked the CLARITY Act. The bill, which aimed to provide regulatory clarity in digital commodity markets, failed to clear the Senate's cloture threshold with a vote of 49-50.
CFTC Chairman Michael Selig stated that existing authority would support new crypto rules, allowing the agency to advance its framework despite the setback. He emphasized the need for Americans to have regulatory clarity, legal certainty, and consumer protections in crypto markets.
The CFTC had prepared a regulatory route before the Senate vote, exploring market-structure rules under existing authority. The agency has also formed an Innovation Task Force to cover crypto assets, blockchain technologies, artificial intelligence, and prediction markets.
