CFTC Unveils Bold Crypto Push Amid Congressional Gridlock
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) Chairman Michael Selig has announced that he will push for bold regulations in the crypto market by the end of 2026. This decision comes after a Senate vote failed to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, which aimed to establish a federal structure for the crypto market.
The bill, backed by CFTC Chairman Selig, proposed that the CFTC oversee decentralized commodities like Bitcoin while the SEC retains jurisdiction over securities tokens. However, the bill was voted down in the Senate with 49 votes in favor and 50 against, just short of the 60 needed.
CFTC Chairman Selig emphasized the importance of legislation as the durable way forward but instructed his staff to explore rules for codifying a market structure using existing powers. This move is seen as a significant shift from Congressional-led regulation to agency-led guidance.
