Chainlink has introduced CustodySync, a new solution designed to bridge the gap between institutional custody and decentralized finance (DeFi) lending markets. With roughly $700 billion in digital assets under custody, representing less than 0.5% of the $250 trillion in traditional assets, the potential to connect institutional capital to onchain finance is substantial. However, traditional custody systems and DeFi lending protocols have not been interoperable, creating a barrier for institutions that require strict custody arrangements.
CustodySync addresses this challenge by keeping a qualified custodian’s systems and DeFi lending markets in sync throughout the loan lifecycle. The solution ensures that the custodian retains control of clients’ digital assets while enabling access to DeFi liquidity. Anchorage Digital Bank, N.A. is the official launch partner, leveraging its custodial infrastructure and Atlas Collateral Management product to facilitate this integration.
The system works by publishing custody balances onchain via Chainlink Proof of Reserve, representing collateral with transfer-restricted receipt tokens, and synchronizing pricing data between the custodian and the lending market. This ensures that both systems calculate loan-to-value (LTV) ratios from the same data source, preventing misalignments that could lead to false liquidations or delays. If a loan breaches liquidation thresholds, the appointed collateral agent manages the process, with final settlement executed via a single atomic transaction.
Chainlink CustodySync combines multiple components of the Chainlink platform, including the Chainlink Runtime Environment (CRE), Chainlink Data Feeds, and Chainlink Data Streams, to automate synchronization and ensure data consistency. For custodians, the solution offers faster time to market, lower operational overhead, and the ability to adopt a standardized integration. For lending markets, it provides independent, verifiable data and access to new institutional demand.
