Chainlink Staking Launches with Variable Rewards and Node Operator Slashing
Chainlink Staking is a unique system that rewards LINK holders for backing the performance of oracle services. Unlike traditional staking, which focuses on yield, Chainlink Staking adds a financial consequence to bad performance. Node operators who fail can lose part of their stake, while community members can raise alerts and earn a reward.
The current version, v0.2, went live on Ethereum mainnet in November 2023, and the project still calls the protocol a beta. The system is designed to secure oracle services by incentivizing node operators to perform well. Community stakers can also contribute by raising alerts if an oracle service fails.
The rewards for Chainlink Staking are variable and tied to real usage. Node operators earn 4% of the total rewards, while community stakers keep 4.32% after the node operator share is deducted. The remaining 1.68% goes towards funding the base reward rate.
