Chiliz CEO touts transparent voting as key to college Fan Tokens

Chiliz Group CEO Alexandre Dreyfus emphasized the importance of transparent voting as the key reason for placing Fan Tokens on a blockchain during an appearance on FOX Business. The company is expanding its Socios Fan Token model to U.S. college athletics, starting with five universities: LSU, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, and Texas A&M. Dreyfus highlighted that blockchain technology ensures fan votes on decisions like stadium songs or jersey numbers are verifiable and transparent.

Chiliz aims to sign 30 university athletic departments within the next 12 months. The revenue from Fan Token sales will partially fund student-athlete Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) programs, with the allocations being publicly visible onchain. The company hopes to launch these tokens before the end of 2026.

During the FOX Business segment, Kris Kassel, SVP of sports growth and innovation at Playfly Sports, suggested that families might be more inclined to pay for fan experiences rather than directly funding athlete payments. The discussion also touched on potential downsides, such as the risk of token prices falling if demand decreases, but Dreyfus clarified that Fan Tokens are not financial instruments and are designed for fan engagement.

The U.S. expansion follows joint SEC and CFTC guidance that classified Fan Tokens as digital collectibles and tools, providing regulatory clarity for sports organizations. Over 70 sports organizations, including prominent teams like Arsenal and Manchester City, already partner with Socios.com.
