Thai police have arrested a 37-year-old Chinese man suspected of involvement in an international crime network and money laundering. The suspect, wanted by Chinese authorities, allegedly facilitated transactions worth over 500 million yuan ($75 million) through cryptocurrency and foreign-currency exchanges for criminal groups. Investigators claim he managed more than 133 accounts and helped arrange visas for members of international crime syndicates linked to other money-laundering cases.
The suspect attempted to evade arrest by using forged documents to report his residence and changing vehicle registration plates. Police found him in a luxury house in Bangkok, where he had been living with an expired Thai visa for more than three years. He will now face legal proceedings before being extradited to China to address the outstanding warrant.
This arrest follows recent efforts by global authorities to disrupt crypto-related crime networks. In June, crypto exchange Coinbase froze over $3 million in cryptocurrency tied to a global operation targeting cyber-enabled crypto scam networks in Southeast Asia. The operation, part of Disruption Week led by the US Department of Justice’s Scam Center Strike Force, involved collaboration with Meta, Microsoft, and Starlink to dismantle scam infrastructure and disrupt criminal activity across 1.4 million social media and email accounts.
