Chinese Whale's Large ZEC Purchase Sparks Market Attention
A large whale investor in Zcash (ZEC) has made significant transactions that have raised eyebrows in the cryptocurrency market. On December 24th of last year, Garret Jin withdrew a total of 202,080 ZEC from Binance and Zcash, worth approximately $88.3 million at the time.
This large-scale purchase comes as ZEC's price continues to rise, reaching $1,580. According to on-chain data, Jin later moved all of the ZEC to shielded addresses using Zcash's privacy feature, but then moved them back to transparent addresses within minutes.
The current value of Jin's ZEC holdings is approximately $320 million, indicating a gain of around $232 million in dollar terms. However, Jin also has a short position on Hyperliquid of approximately 38,000 ZEC, currently worth about $60 million, resulting in an unrealized loss of around $34.5 million.
This short position may be considered a partial hedge against Jin's larger spot ZEC holdings, potentially offsetting any potential decline in the event of a price drop in ZEC.
