Circle Acquires IBM Blockchain Patents to Bolster Financial Infrastructure

Circle Internet Group has become the largest U.S. holder of blockchain-related patents after acquiring nearly 1,000 patents from IBM.

The portfolio includes over 680 patent families spanning multiple industries such as financial services, banking infrastructure, insurance platforms, and cloud security.

Circle said the acquired technology will reinforce its products across its ecosystem, including USDC, EURC, the Arc Layer-1 blockchain, and the Circle Payments Network.

The acquisition strengthens Circle's position among financial institutions evaluating blockchain infrastructure and provides flexibility as banks expand tokenization initiatives.
