Circle Acquires IBM's Entire Blockchain Patent Portfolio in Blockbuster Deal
Circle, a blockchain technology company, has acquired IBM's entire blockchain patent portfolio. The deal includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents covering foundational blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification, and secure cloud operations.
The acquisition directly supports Circle's USDC stablecoin, Circle Payments Network, Arc platform, and a growing suite of on-chain products and agentic financial tools. The two companies also plan to explore additional commercial opportunities.
According to crypto analyst Scott Melker, IBM spent years developing enterprise blockchain technology but ultimately walked away from it entirely. 'IBM just capitulated,' Melker said, adding that the acquisition is really about building a moat as stablecoin competition accelerates and every major institution races to launch tokenized asset products.
