Circle Renews Coinbase Partnership Through 2029 with USDC Deal
Circle has renewed its partnership with Coinbase through 2029 under an automatic three-year renewal clause. This agreement, which began in August 2023, allows Circle to continue issuing and operating USDC (USD Coin) as a stablecoin. The deal gives Coinbase a minority equity stake in Circle and a share of the income generated from USDC reserves.
Circle's CFO, Jeremy Fox-Geen, stated that the company will maintain its growth-focused strategy, investing capital in products, infrastructure, and opportunities to achieve long-term growth as stablecoins become more popular. The partnership is a key element of Circle's business strategy for both companies, with over 150 partners distributing USDC on exchanges, wallets, payments, and financial platforms.
USDC circulation has grown by 19% in Q2 compared to the same period last year, reaching $73.3 billion. About 30% of USDC in circulation is stored on Coinbase's platform. Circle plans to continue expanding its distribution agreements while maintaining profitability, as analysts have increasingly focused on this aspect rather than just circulation.
