Circle Secures NYDFS Trust Charter, Boosting Regulatory Compliance
Circle, a leading financial and stablecoin services company, has achieved another milestone in its quest for regulatory compliance. The company has received a limited-purpose trust charter from the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), allowing it to expand its operations in the state.
The NYDFS license validates Circle's commitment to following 'the highest standards of safety, transparency, and compliance,' said Jeremy Allaire, co-founder and CEO of Circle. The company was a pioneer in receiving such a license in 2015, and this latest achievement positions it as one of the most regulated stablecoin issuers in the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
The limited-purpose trust charter enables Circle to provide custody services to its customers, issue state-approved stablecoins, and manage the reserves backing them. This comes after Circle received U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) approval to establish Circle National Trust, putting its stablecoin operation under federal oversight.
Allaire emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating that it 'has been a longstanding objective for Circle given the regulatory clarity that comes with it.' He also highlighted the importance of NYDFS as an international standard setter for digital asset regulation.
