Circle Stock Plunges on CLARITY Act Fears, But Bitwise Sees Bright Future
Circle's stock took a hit after reports emerged that proposed provisions in the CLARITY Act could limit incentives tied to holding or using USDC. The stock fell approximately 20% on Tuesday, but recovered partially on Wednesday with a 3% increase to $104.44.
Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan stated that the market reaction was an overreaction. He predicted that Circle could reach a valuation of $75 billion by 2030.
Hougan cited a Citigroup base case estimate that the total stablecoin market could grow to $1.9 trillion by 2030, with USDC holding roughly 25% of that market. He pushed back on concerns about competition from large banks and payment firms, saying 'Historically, innovators do pretty well at protecting early market leads.'
