Circle Stock Slides 5.2% Amid CirBTC Launch Disappointment

Circle Internet stock is experiencing a significant decline in morning trading, sliding 5.2% to reach $90.60 after yesterday's strong rally.

The downturn can be attributed to several factors, including profit-taking by investors and the underwhelming performance of Circle's newly introduced cirBTC wrapped token.

CirBTC, a 1:1 Bitcoin-backed ERC-20 product targeting institutional users, launched with only 40 tokens in circulation, despite having reserves held across 14 addresses at over 106% coverage.

This stark contrast between reserve readiness and market uptake is putting pressure on the stock, as it highlights Circle's struggles to compete with established competitors like Coinbase's cbBTC, which dominate the Ethereum wrapped Bitcoin market.

The competitive landscape remains intense, with a consortium-backed rival token supported by major payment networks and technology firms having entered the market earlier this summer.
