Circle's Africa Partnerships and OKX Integration Fuel Stablecoin Growth in Emerging Markets
The stablecoin settlement infrastructure is rapidly expanding into emerging markets, where currency volatility creates significant demand for dollar-stable rails. Circle's partnerships in Africa and OKX liquidity integration are key drivers of this growth, bypassing traditional correspondent banking systems entirely.
The current global payment system, built for a bygone era, incurs approximately $5 billion in annual fees to send money between African nations via correspondent banks in Europe or the US. In contrast, the industry has adopted a streamlined approach: fiat in, USDC across, fiat out, making the blockchain invisible to the sender and receiver.
B2B stablecoin payments have skyrocketed from under $100 million per month in early 2023 to over $6 billion per month by mid-2025, a 60-fold increase in just 30 months. The growth is concentrated in emerging markets, where roughly 66% of the global stablecoin supply is now held.
Circle's strategy involves partnering with Onafriq to access 1 billion mobile money wallets and 500 million bank accounts across 40 African markets, slashing rollout times from six months to a mere four to six weeks. This has been complemented by their recent $400 million acquisition of Tazapay, which brings local payout rails in over 100 markets into the fold.
