Circle's cirBTC Brings Transparency to Tokenized Bitcoin
Circle has launched cirBTC, a new tokenized version of Bitcoin that combines public reserve addresses and Chainlink Proof of Reserve to allow independent verification of its collateral.
This innovative approach enables the market to verify that the amount of Bitcoin supporting cirBTC fully covers all tokens in circulation. For every cirBTC issued, Circle maintains an equivalent amount of BTC in reserve, addressing a fundamental question surrounding such assets: whether the tokens are truly backed by sufficient BTC.
The company has published the specific Bitcoin addresses used for collateral, allowing holdings to be compared against the total cirBTC supply in real-time. This direct reserve monitoring contrasts with models that rely primarily on periodic reports.
CirBTC allows Bitcoin to be utilized within smart-contract blockchains without requiring investors to sell their underlying BTC assets. The strategic link with USDC broadens potential use cases, enabling Bitcoin to serve as collateral to access stablecoin liquidity without the investor having to close their BTC position.
