Hong Kong Retailers Worry Over Chelsea Stablecoin Jersey Deal

The Chelsea FC stablecoin sponsorship deal has raised concerns in Hong Kong about merchandising regulatory compliance. In late August, Chelsea partnered with Circle to display the USDC logo on their official jerseys for the upcoming 2026-27 season. This agreement has created uncertainty among local sports apparel retailers and consumers due to strict digital asset marketing frameworks.

Under Hong Kong's Stablecoins Ordinance, which took effect on August 1, 2025, actively marketing unlicensed fiat-referenced stablecoins is prohibited. The ordinance defines active marketing as targeting a specific audience, using language or local domains, and implementing an intentional promotional strategy.

The uncertainty stems from the fact that Circle's USDC token is not issued or licensed under Hong Kong law, unlike Anchorpoint Financial Limited and HSBC, which hold operating licences in the city. This puts replica jersey distributors in a precarious regulatory position.
