Circle’s DJ Khaled Post Sparks Crypto Community Backlash Over Past ICO Controversy
Circle has sparked controversy in the crypto community after posting content suggesting that rapper DJ Khaled had joined “Team USDC.” The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the official USDC account on October 5, featured DJ Khaled wearing a Chelsea jersey with “USDC by Circle” written across the chest. Circle CEO Jeremy Allaire later shared the post, welcoming DJ Khaled to the team. However, there was no official announcement of a sponsorship or promotional deal.
The backlash stems from DJ Khaled’s past involvement in the Centra ICO case. In 2017, he promoted the Centra token without disclosing that he was paid $50,000 for the promotion, leading to a $150,000 penalty from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). While DJ Khaled was not charged with fraud, the incident raised concerns about transparency and trust in the crypto space.
Critics, including crypto investigator Joseph Sciarrichi, questioned Circle’s decision to associate with DJ Khaled, citing his history with the Centra case. Others, like Taylor Monahan, formerly of MetaMask, argued that Circle had put a figure linked to a notable ICO fraud case at the forefront of its branding. The Centra case involved false claims about partnerships with Visa and Mastercard, and its co-founders were found guilty.
Despite the controversy, DJ Khaled’s legal restrictions related to the SEC settlement ended in November 2020, allowing him to sign new contracts with crypto firms. However, the incident highlights the challenges stablecoin issuers face when using celebrities for promotions and the potential impact on market trust and reputation.
