Circle's Facilitator Service Simplifies x402 Payments for AI Agents
Circle has introduced its Facilitator Service for x402 payments settled in USDC across Arc, Base, and Polygon PoS. The service allows AI agents to authorize USDC payments without holding separate gas tokens, as Circle handles screening, transaction submission, and on-chain settlement.
The payment process begins with a web request, not a checkout. An AI agent asks an online service for something, such as a dataset or API response, and the server replies with a price. The agent signs a payment authorization, and USDC moves to the seller's address.
Circle pays the gas fees and submits the transfer. The wallet signature is the actual spending permission, identifying the wallet paying, recipient, USDC amount, period of validity, and unique code known as a nonce.
