Citi and Coinbase Deepen Partnership on Digital-Fiat Payment Interoperability
Citi and Coinbase have expanded their collaboration to connect digital and fiat payments for corporations and consumers. The partnership aims to address the operational complexity and risk associated with connecting traditional banking and securities services with blockchain infrastructure.
The expansion marks a key milestone in Citi's digital assets strategy, which focuses on solving real-world client needs by building production-grade capabilities that connect traditional financial infrastructure with emerging digital networks.
Two core initiatives have been introduced: Coinbase Virtual Accounts and Merchant Stablecoin Acceptance. Coinbase has selected Citi's Virtual Account Wallet solution to power Coinbase Virtual Accounts, providing bank-account-like functionality for payments customers. This enables incoming fiat to be automatically converted into stablecoins.
Citi will also enable its institutional clients to accept stablecoin payments at checkout through Spring by Citi, its integrated payment acceptance platform. Coinbase Payments powers the stablecoin acceptance, automatically converting digital currency into fiat and settling funds as the bank of record.
