Citi and Coinbase Power Stablecoin Payments for Institutional Clients
Citi has announced that its institutional clients can now accept stablecoin payments through Spring by Citi using Coinbase's infrastructure. This marks a significant shift in corporate banking, as institutions are increasingly looking to integrate digital assets into their payment systems.
The partnership between Citi and Coinbase enables customers to automatically convert incoming fiat currency into stablecoins using Citi's Virtual Account Wallet. The exact conversion choices remain unclear, but the service is available now for Citi's institutional clients.
Coinbase Virtual Accounts also gain automatic fiat conversion through Citi infrastructure, allowing customers to move money received in a conventional currency into stablecoins. However, neither company has disclosed customer count, payment volume, or named live merchant for the Citi integration.
The partnership between Citi and Coinbase was first announced in October 2025, with the intention of developing institutional digital asset payment capabilities. The two routes described serve different customers and begin with different forms of money, but may be complementary services.
