Citi Enters Stablecoin Market with Coinbase Partnership

Citi has expanded its payments partnership with Coinbase to incorporate Citi's Virtual Account Wallet. This wallet will automatically convert incoming fiat into stablecoins for institutional clients, allowing them to accept stablecoin payments through Coinbase infrastructure.

The move comes as the total stablecoin capitalization reached about $311 billion in August, according to CoinDesk Research. Stablecoins have become a significant financial market, with banks increasingly seeing them as tools for 24/7 settlement, cross-border transfers, and tokenized financial markets.

Ripple's RLUSD is near $2.4 billion in circulation, but Citi's entry into the stablecoin market challenges Ripple's position. Citi's Virtual Account Wallet connects corporate bank accounts directly to blockchain-based money, accelerating institutional crypto adoption for 24/7 settlement and cross-border transfers.
