Citi Raises Ethereum Price Target to $3,028 Amid Growing Market Activity
Citi, a leading bank, has raised its twelve-month price target for Ethereum from $2,240 to $3,028, a 35 percent increase. This move is significant, as Ethereum is currently trading at around $2,725, which is just under 11 percent away from the new target. Citi's reasoning behind this increase includes the return of inflows into exchange-traded crypto products, a friendlier macroeconomic environment, and increased market activity.
The twelve-month price target is not just a prediction, but also a key factor in determining tax implications for German investors. Currently, if a cryptocurrency is held for more than one year, the gain is tax-free. However, if the draft bill sent by the Federal Ministry of Finance is approved, crypto gains would become investment income, and the holding period would fall away, resulting in a flat-rate withholding tax of 25 percent plus the solidarity surcharge, totaling roughly 26.4 percent.
For investors, the purchase date becomes crucial, as it determines whether the gain is tax-free or subject to the new tax rules. A worked example illustrates the difference, showing that a gain of 1,100 euros would remain tax-free if purchased in 2026, but would be subject to the new tax rules if purchased in 2027.
