Citi Taps Coinbase for Stablecoin Payments in Partnership Deal
Citi has partnered with Coinbase to offer stablecoin checkout for its corporate clients. The feature will allow businesses that use Citigroup to process their payments to accept stablecoins from customers and receive fiat in return.
The setup is made possible through Citi's Spring platform, which enables merchants to accept various payment methods, including stablecoins. When a customer pays with stablecoins, Coinbase's infrastructure swaps the tokens for fiat, and Citi credits the merchant's account.
This partnership marks an expansion of the existing relationship between Citi and Coinbase, which was established in October 2025. At that time, the two companies collaborated on moving client money between fiat and crypto. The new feature is expected to open up stablecoin payments to over 150 million people worldwide who hold these tokens.
Citi processes around $6 trillion a day, making this move significant for the company's efforts to offer more payment options to its clients. Shahmir Khaliq, Citi's head of services, stated in a release that 'This partnership with Coinbase is a pivotal step in our ongoing Services strategy to provide optionality for our clients.'
