Clarity Act Crypto Bill Faces Crucial Senate Vote
The Digital Asset Market Clarity Act, also known as the Clarity Act, has been at the top of the crypto sector's wish list for years. This bill aims to establish a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies in the US for the first time in history.
The massive 600-page bill would formally split oversight of the crypto sector between the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). However, critics argue that giving the CFTC majority control is a way for the industry to avoid heavy regulatory scrutiny.
Ryan VanGrack, vice chair of Coinbase, stated that 'tens of millions of Americans are investing in products that don't have clear regulatory oversight.' He added that 'whether you love crypto or hate crypto, you should want it regulated.'
The Clarity Act is set to undergo a key procedural vote in the Senate on Tuesday. If it passes, it will need 60 'yes' votes to move forward, with all 53 Republicans and seven Democrats or Independents needed to support it.
