Clarity Act Fails, Casting Uncertainty Over Crypto Stocks
A Senate procedural vote failed to advance the Clarity Act, which aimed to establish clearer market-structure rules for the crypto industry. The bill sought to divide oversight between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, set registration requirements, and strengthen anti-money-laundering protections.
Despite bipartisan support, ethics disputes over public officials' crypto profits helped sink the bill. As a result, platforms like Coinbase and Robinhood face a longer stretch of legal and compliance uncertainty.
Roninhood's shares fell 6.2% in response to the news, while Coinbase declined by 5.6%. The Clarity Act's failure has added to the volatility surrounding these stocks, which have been impacted by the broader market sell-off.
